'Messerschmitt' Micro-Car

The Messerschmitt micro-car was designed by a former Luftwaffe engineer named Fritz Fend, and was manufactured by RSM Messerschmitt Werke, the same company that produced the legendary Messerschmitt aircraft of World War II. As a result of a treaty at the end of the War, they were forbidden to manufacture aircraft for 20 years, so between 1953 and 1964 they produced micro-cars that became known as "Cinderella's Coffins". The example here is a 1960 KR 200: about 25,000 examples of this three-wheeled model were produced in all. Its unusual features include tandem seating, cockpit type roof/door and direct steering. FIAT 509

Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana de Automobili Torino) was established in 1889, and produced its first car, a 2-cylinder carriage type, , the same year. By 1901 they were producing conventional 4 cylinder cars and participating in motor sport. After 1927, the company concentrated on producing passenger cars, , starting with the 501. The 509 was the first real 'compact' car with a sub-1-litre engine produced in volume by Fiat, and was first seen at the Milan show in 1925. Notable features were the overhead valves and overhead camshafts. In 1928, 509 Berlinas took the first two places in the Monte Carlo Rally. In 1926 the second series, or 509A, was introduced, with various small improvements. In 1926 a small number of supercharger versions, known as the 509SC, were also built. These cars were widely used in motor sport, with many successes. Over 90,000 examples of the 509 were built. |
