Chairman's Message

Dear Visitor,

I have two main reasons for my interest in the Çengelhan: firstly, it was the place where my late father Vehbi Koç started his working life, when an apprentice to his father: and secondly, a wish to render service to the people of this great city of Ankara - my birthplace – by opening an institution similar to the ten year-old Rahmi M. Koç Museum in Istanbul.

Whenever I came to Ankara in the past, if I could find a spare moment before returning to Istanbul I would climb up the citadel hill as far as the clock tower, before descending again, chatting all the while to the street traders... and always, the derelict Çengelhan and its neighbouring Çukurhan would catch my eye. During the tenure of my good friend Mayor Murat Karayalçın, the restoration of these Hans got under way, with the preparation of detailed plans: but after he left office, these initiatives were suspended. We then started negotiations directly with the Han's owners, the Vakıflar ('Foundations'), and managed to lease the Han for 20 years – the maximum period allowed by law.

We have now renovated the Han to the designs of Mr. Karayalçın; we have transferred several hundred objects from our Istanbul museum; and Divan has opened a restaurant in the courtyard. However, the project is still in its infancy, and work continues on both the museum's surroundings and its collections. Our aim was threefold: to create a cultural landmark for Ankara, to set an example in our chosen field, and to give the public a chance to sample the attractions of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum without having to make the long journey to Istanbul. I very much hope you will like the results.

With best wishes,
